Cedar
It’s not about resisting
gravity, or she’d lean back
into shade. Last spring her roots
had toehold, held her almost plumb
at the riverbank, but acting
on code from the heartwood she’s thrown
a branch out halfway across the river. A thickbowed,
desperate gesture that tugs
her toward the water. She can’t help it,
she reaches like a beggar for the sun’s loose change.
