Submissions & Inquiries

Mayapple Press is a highly-selective small press established in 1978 by poet and editor Judith Kerman. We focus on literature not often celebrated by either the mainstream or the avant-garde. This includes poetry which is both challenging and accessible; women’s writing; the rustbelt/rural culture that stretches from the Hudson Valley to the Great Lakes; the recent immigrant experience; poetry in translation; science fiction poetry. We also welcome poetry anthologies, short fiction and science fiction poetry. Publications are in trade paperback formats (30-100 pages). In general, we publish only authors with prior publications with reputable presses or literary magazines.

Mayapple Press will read manuscripts between July 1 and July 31, 2012. Please do not submit during other times of the year. Our normal response time is 3-4 months.

Please read our submissions guidelines before sending your manuscript. If your work has not previously been published (or if you have published only in anthologies or magazines where authors pay or are required to purchase copies in order to be included), please click here.

Submissions should include the following:

• a manuscript of no more than 100 pages (or a sample of 6-10 pages). Please use a clean, readable font such as Times New Roman, Arial, etc. Number your pages. No more than 1 poem per page. Use Page Break (Ctrl+Enter on PC) between poems.
• a table of contents
• a brief publications resume and bio
• $20 reading fee (paid through Submittable). All authors who pay the fee are entitled to one copy of any book in the Mayapple Press catalog. Please notify us of your choice by email - do not use the Paypal button on the site.
